MHS BAND WIND AUDITION MATERIAL

AUDITIONS FOR THE 2024-25 WILL BE ONLINE.  PLEASE SEE DIRECTIONS BELOW

**DEADLINE IS SATURDAY MAY 25th**

We will be utilizing Flipgrid for these auditions.  This a FREE service.  You will need to sign in to Fipgrid using your school email or Gmail account. No one else but the band directors will see this video and you will not have a view count. You can do this either on a computer or a cell phone/mobile device.  Please follow the directions below:

You must be completely visible performing these scales in your video submission

From your Cell Phone/Mobile Device:
  1. Download the free Flipgrid app from your app store
  2. Open the app and enter the following for the class depending your instrument family (Woodwind or Brass) and click Go.

  3. On the next screen you will select login with your School Email (This is the Microsoft login version) or a Gmail account.  
  4. Right under the "MHS Band Auditions" image, there you will see a button with 3 lines and says "2 Topics"
  5. Click that then select the audition you would like to record at that moment; either Etude or Scales
  6. From here, you will click the Red Camera icon to record. 
    1. ​You have 2 minutes and 30 Seconds total to record either video
    2. Remember, you must perform the scales in 2 minutes or less (See Below)
  7. ​At the beginning of your video, state YOUR NAME, INSTRUMENT, and CURRENT SCHOOL.
  8. When asked, change your Display Name to: Last Name, First Name, Instrument, Current Grade
  9. Submit when done

From your Computer:
  1. Click on the following link that is associated with your instrument family (Woodwind or Brass)

All woodwind and brass students are required to audition for chair placement and concert band placement to be members of the Mighty Black & Gold Band. Auditions must be submitted to FlipGrid by Saturday, May 25th.  If you absolutely have exhausted all means to submit an online audition using FlipGrid, please contact Mr. Schultz or Mr. Coots at our email addresses at the bottom of this page to set up other options to submit auditions.  

AUDITION WILL CONSIST OF:
  1. Seven Major Scales
    1. Performed in this order: Concert C, F, Bb, Eb, Ab, Db, & Gb in that order
    2. In 2 minutes or less
    3. Must be Memorized
    4. As many octaves per scale as you are capable
    5. Must be performed in complete octaves
    6. Use All-State Scale Pattern: Tongue up / Slur Down with Arpeggios

  2. Prepared Music
    1. Please prepare the musical etude below. Points will be based on precision (correct notes & rhythms), tone quality, attention to details, and musicality.

PERCUSSION:
Percussion will audition for instrument placement during percussion audition camp in May.  These auditions  will are used to determine marching band instrument assignment as well as entry into the MHS Band program.

​The all-county auditions/in-house auditions in November will be used to place percussion students in the appropriate concert ensemble. ​​
